Sex is a big step in a relationship. It's important to be on the same page as your partner. In the novel, Friendswood, by Rene Steinke, characters were not on the same page and consent was not discussed. Willa, a sophomore in high school, was drugged and raped. She cut class with Cully, a senior in high school. He took her to a party and that's when he and other men took advantage of her. Willa didn't remember much, but she knew bad things went down. Willa is upset and doesn't want to talk about what happened. Who should stand up for Willa? Who should speak up on her part?
Willa's mother should speak on her daughter's behalf. Her mother is aware of what happened. However, her mother isn't doing enough to help her. Willa's mom claims "We just need to pray (...) And pray and pray. There's a way out of this" (Steinke 160). I agree that praying is important during times of need, but her mother needs to be there for her more. All she tells Willa is that she needs to pray. What about talking about what happened? What about giving Willa advice? Willa needs to talk about it more rather than keeping it to herself. If you don't face a problem head on, it will never really get resolved. Her mother needs to help Willa understand that what happened wasn't her fault. She was put in a horrible situation and what happened to her was not okay. Her mother needs to stand up for Willa and get the word out there that Cully and his friends are in the wrong. Overall, Willa's mother needs to step up and help her daughter even more than she is now.

To lie or not to lie?

The diamond necklace Mathilde borrowed from her friend

Mathilde wishes to be at the top of her social class
The purpose of Mathilde borrowing the necklace was for a ball her and her husband were going to attend. All Mathilde cared about was looking amazing for the ball. She wanted to dress like the wealthy. Her and her husband aren't among the wealthy though. They are considered to be in the "clerk class" of people, which is also known as the middle class. Mathilde longs to be rich. She wants to be among the "rich class". She couldn't attend the ball without looking her best. She went out and got a new gown and she borrowed the necklace.
Was lying the right thing to do? Lying was not the right thing to do in this case because it ruined Mathilde's life! It took her ten years to pay the necklace off. TEN! If she told the truth, she could have found out the necklace wasn't made of real diamonds, which would have saved her a lot of time and money. Her friend may have been mad about the necklace getting lost, but it's not the end of the world. Overall, lying was not the right thing to do in Mathilde's situation.

Colin's Controversy

Colin Kaepernick kneeling for the National Anthem
I also find it disrespectful to kneel for your country's National Anthem. Our country's anthem represents who are as a nation. Regardless of not agreeing with everything our country does, the songs purpose is to bring all of us together despite our differences. Another problem I have with kneeling to the National Anthem regards the military. Everyday there are people fighting and risking their lives for our country. Out of respect for them, everyone should always stand for the National Anthem. A retired Marine, Jeffery Powers, wrote a letter to the NFL commissioners saying, "I watch multi-millionaire athletes who never did anything in their lives but play a game, disrespect what brave Americans fought and died for. They are essentially spitting in the faces and on the graves of real men, men who have actually done something for this country beside playing with a ball and believing they're something special. They're not. My marines and soldiers were." This may be a bit harsh, but I believe it's true. Football players make disgusting amounts of money a year to throw a football around. The least they can do is show some respect for the military.
Although I don't agree with what Colin Kaepernick did, others support him. Other NFL players began to kneel or sit with him. An example of a player who began to sit for the National Anthem is Michael Bennett. Bennett is a defensive end on the Seattle Seahawks. He claims, "With everything that's been going on the last couple of months, and especially after the last couple of days in Virginia, seeing everything that's going on out there, (...) I just wanted to be able to use my platform to be able to continuously speak on injustice." I agree that Bennett should use his platform to speak on injustice, or speak on anything he feels, but not on the football field.
